Welcome to the English Department Knowledge Base at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The EDKB Wiki is a database that makes available the various interests, talents, and resources of the English Department community. See the Main Page to learn more about the EDKB. The wiki does not offer information on current course offerings, nor is it a comprehensive archive of materials related to all past courses. Visit the English Department home page for this type of information.

A collection of teaching resources available to the students and faculty of UCSB. This handout of campus teaching support URLS was compiled by TA training co-coordinator Eric Martinsen, Fall 2005.

Campus Learning Assistance Service (CLAS)

Students seeking individual assistance with any writing assignment or project can sign up in advance for an appointment in the Writing Lab, Building 300 or use the Writing Drop-in Lab, 970 Embarcadero del Mar, Isla Vista, on a first-come, first served basis. Tutors in both labs assist students at any stage in the writing process: from analyzing the assignment to revising for clarity and conciseness. However, CLAS writing tutors do not proofread or edit papers.

Course-Specific Workshops can be arranged to help students develop the skills they need to master the requirements of specific courses.

For more information, please visit the CLAS website or call (805) 893-3269.

Campus Computer Resources (administered by Instructional Computing)

  • General Info: operations@ic.ucsb.edu or info@ic.ucsb.edu
  • Scheduling a Lab: The Computer Labs at Kerr Hall can be scheduled in advance! You can arrange lecture times in any of the labs (Phelps Labs & MPL/Language Lab in Kerr Hall), to have your students obtain priority access stickers for drop-in lab use, or to acquire software you will need for you class. Do not assume that currently installed software in a classroom will remain available, as a new request is required each quarter.
Please submit a Scheduling Request Form (SRF) for each class you will be teaching that needs lab services. For convenience and, in an effort to conserve resources, use an online SRF at ic.ucsb.edu/faculty/scheduling. If you have any questions or need further information, please e-mail info@ic.ucsb.edu
  • Need to find out if your classroom is equipped for multimedia work? Visit the Classroom Services website or call J.O. Davis (Classroom Services Director) at (805)-893-2461.

Media Equipment, Kerr Hall:

Computer Use/Rental

  • Media Equipment in Kerr Hall 1160 has a limited number of Macintosh and PC compatible computers, both desktops and laptops. These are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. To schedule a computer and operator, call (805) 893-3549 at least two full working days in advance. Be prepared to tell them if you want a Mac or PC, sound, a floppy, CD-ROM, zip, or DVD drive, digital projection capabilities, or a network connection.

Important:

  • Instructors must pick up and return computers and digital projectors to Kerr Hall, not the English Department. Instructors using this equipment should go to Media Equipment in advance to learn how to set up the equipment they will be using. The staff there is very helpful!
  • All equipment requests must be done well in advance of the quarter in which services are needed.

DVD player and VCR Rental:

A minimum of 48 working hours is needed to obtain a television/VCR, DVD player, or portable data projector from Kerr Hall Media Services. For distribution of a film, video, or DVD to rooms that have distribution available, a reservation of 24 working hours is necessary. To see what rooms have distribution, please visit the Media Equipment homepage.

Media Materials Rental:

Planning on showing a DVD, video or other type of film in class? Kerr Hall can also arrange the rental of such media. For information on which titles are available--and also how quickly they can be obtained--please visit Film and Video Ordering.

Each instructor is alloted $100 for film and video rental and/or purchases per each academic course taught, per quarter. To read more about the services offered by the Media Equipment folks, please visit id.ucsb.edu/me/me.html.

  • A minimum of 10 working days is needed to obtain videos/films/DVDs. Please contact English Department staff as soon as you know you will need resources from Kerr Hall.
  • Some films, DVDs, and videos can also be placed, upon request, in the Kerr Hall Language and Learning Lab, room 2160, for students to view independently. Some exceptions are for items rented from off-campus sources by IR or items requested by other instructors. The Learning Lab's hours are generally M-F 9-4.
    • Please Note: a $15 late fee will be assessed to your $100 allotment if:
      • you do not allow IR a two-week notice to order media such as films, DVDs, or videos available only through off-campus sources;
      • you do not allow IR a one-week notice for changes to or cancellations of off-campus orders; and
