Assignment 1: Taming of the Shrew

Assignment 1

Due October 9, 2002

1. Find one good word in the text – a word that may or may not reappear in the text. Give a quote for context and a short paragraph to explain why you think this one word is important to the play – to the characters, to its themes, to its problems. No essay needed – only a good sentence or two.

2. Have two probing questions ready (in writing) to ask in class– questions that will help us clarify and complicate the play. We don’t necessarily want answers.

3. Kate’s last speech has confounded critics for years. We are certainly up to the challenge. Give me no more than a page of good writing on your thoughts on this last speech. Is she a sellout? Is she teasing? What’s happening? Your opinions matter, but back it up with evidence from the play (direct quotations preferred but not required).
