[edit] I. IDs (3 points each, 30% of final)

Choose 10 out of 15 IDs. Be sure to 1) identify the term or character, 2) state the title(s) of the play(s) from which it was taken or to which it applies (if applicable), and 3) briefly (in no more than a couple of sentences) discuss its significance.

[edit] II. Passages (10 points each, 30% of final)

Write a short essay (two or three paragraphs) on 3 of 5 passages. Be sure to identify the title of the play from which each passage is taken and indicate the context of the passage within the play. Paying close attention to stylistic detail (e.g., imagery, metaphors, symbols, tone, etc.), discuss themes presented in the passage and themes of the play as commented on by the passage.

  1. No hat upon his head, his stockings fouled, / Ungartered, and down-gyved to his ankle, / Pale as his shirt, his knees knocking each other, / And with a look so piteous in purport / As if he had been loosed out of hell / To speak of horrors -- he comes before me.
  2. Lovers and madmen have such seething brains, / Such shaping fantasies, that apprehend / More than cool reason ever comprehends. / The lunatic, the lover and the poet / Are of imagination all compact.
  3. Conceal me what I am, and be my aid / For such disguise as haply shall become / The form of my intent. I'll serve this Duke. /Though shall present me as an eunuch to him. / It may be worth thy pains, for I can sing / And speak to him in many sorts of music / That will allow me very worth his service.
  4. I'the last night's storm I such a fellow saw / Which made me think a man a worm. My son / Came then into my mind; and yet my mind / Was then scarce friends with him. I have heard more since. / As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; / They kill us for their sport.
  5. Go to your bosom, / Knock there, and ask your heart what it doth know /That's like my brother's fault; if it confess / A natural guiltiness such as his, / Let it not sound a thought upon your tongue / Against my brother's life.

[edit] III. Long Essay (40 points, 40% of final)

Answer 1 of 4 questions. In your answer compare and contrast at least 3 of the plays from the course. Work comparatively, arguing a thesis by citing specific evidence from the texts to the best of your ability. Be sure to avoid repeating ideas you've discussed in papers or in Part II.
