[edit] SECTION OBJECTIVES

Your goal in section is to engage actively with the assigned texts through discussion and close reading. By sharing your ideas and questions with your peers, you will enrich your understanding of the readings and the historical and literary contexts from which they emerge.

[edit] ATTENDANCE / PARTICIPATION

15% of your grade depends upon your performance in section. Four or more absences from section will result in a "F" for this category. It is mandatory that you attend and participate actively in every scheduled section. You are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the readings and material covered in lecture. It is in your best interest that you attend class to improve your performance on the essays and the final exam. Frequent and/or excessive tardiness is inexcusable; you will be considered absent if you show up late without your work.

[edit] PAPERS

You are required to write two papers. The first will be worth 15% of your total grade; the second paper will be worth 25% of your grade. We will discuss paper topics, due dates, and other particulars for each paper. I expect you to use standard MLA format at all times. All paper assignments must be turned in on the scheduled due date by the time specified unless you have received an extension from me. Consult me well in advance of the due date if you're having or anticipate problems. Late papers will be penalized one full grade for each day late.

[edit] READING QUIZZES

There will be periodic quizzes on the material read for lecture. The quizzes will be given in lecture. These will be worth 20% of your final grade.

[edit] FINAL EXAM

During the final examination period, you will be required to take a comprehensive final examination (25% of your final grade) on all of the material covered throughout the course. We will review material in section prior to the exam.

[edit] ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

All of the work you turn in must be entirely your own. Plagiarism is unacceptable and is a serious offense that bears serious consequences. Don't do it. It is not worth the risk.

[edit] EXTRA CREDIT

Periodically, I will offer extra credit assignments. You can use extra credit to improve your participation grade for the class.
