Discussion Section Information

Attendance and Participation
Section is worthless without vibrant and active participation. This is where you get to test out your own ideas and participate in intellectual conversations about the course material with your peers in a low-risk environment. Your section grade is worth 10% of your total grade. Regular section attendance is mandatory. I define attendance as being present, prepared (you've brought, read, and thought about the reading), and participatory (you are alert, engaged, and contribute to class discussion). You are allowed one excused absence (see course syllabus). Your grade can be affected dramatically by poor attendance. If you are late, I will mark you absent; it is your responsibility to let me know at the end of class that you came in late. If you are perpetually late, I will not erase your absence. If you do miss section, you are responsible for missed material (i.e. announcements, handouts, assignments). In the second week of class I will circulate a class list with all of your classmates' phone numbers and/or email addresses. Before you contact me with basic questions about missed material, consult the list and contact a classmate.
Messages
You may leave written messages in my mailbox in the English Department mailroom (South Hall 2nd floor). The best way to contact me is by sending an e-mail message (address above). Don't call the English department office.
Papers
You are encouraged to discuss your thoughts about your papers with me before you begin writing. Preliminary conferences (before the due date) are usually more helpful than waiting until after you have received a dissatisfying grade. Save your work in multiple places. All grade contestations must be in writing. See handout on paper expectations for further information. See course syllabus for late policy.
Office Hours
I hold one office hour a week (see above) but am also happy to make appointments with you if you cannot come during the scheduled hour. Please feel free to come and talk to me about anything related to the course. 1 expect to see each of you at least once during the quarter.
Final Note
I am a reasonable teacher. If you are having trouble performing in the class and on your assignments (for whatever reasons), please come and talk to me about what ails you. If you do not communicate with me, I can't give you the benefit of the doubt.
