Course Website Platforms

Programmed by Eric Weitzel, a Transcriptions research and teaching assistant, Coursebuilder is a custom system that allows UCSB English Department instructors to create full-fledged course Web sites through the use of Web forms. Course sites include pages for overviews, schedules of reading, assignments, student projects, etc., as well as class notes pages (for outlines, texts, or multimedia to be used during class meetings). Course content is kept in a SQL Server database that dynamically generates Web pages. Instructors may choose one of a number of frontend "skins" for the display of their course site depending on the nature of the course. There are "skins" that duplicate the look-and-feel of the general department site (sample course), the Transcriptions site (sample course) , the Early Modern Studies site (sample course), and the American Cultures & Global Contexts Center site (sample course).

Unlike commercially available course management systems, Coursebuilder is fully integrated with the main English department database so that course information that has been entered by staff on the department site (e.g., enrollment codes, locations, times, office hours, etc.) automatically show up in course sites, and, reciprocally, a "publish" option in Coursebuilder allows instructors to publicize classes or specific course events (e.g., guest appearances or film screenings) on the department's online calendar and other parts of its Web site.

LSIT is the group providing technology support for the College of Letters and Science at UCSB.

GauchoSpace is a set of online services designed to help faculty manage their courses and communicate with their students. The key component of GauchoSpace uses the Moodle course management system. Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities.

Sakai is a set of software tools designed to help instructors, researchers, and students create websites for collaboration. Using a web browser, users choose from a set of features to create a site that meets their needs. For more info, check out the Sakai@UCSB Pilot Project.

WordPress is an open source self-hosted blogging tool. WordPress is completely customizable and can be used for almost anything. There is also a service called WordPress.com which lets you get started with a new and free WordPress-based blog in seconds, but varies in several ways and is less flexible than the WordPress you download and install yourself.
